Seven years ago this week, I was ... well, terrified.

I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but it's really not.

Back in February of that year, my husband and I were snowed in (our kids were at my mom's) and I complained that I had nothing to read. He had seen our Amazon bill (I know you feel me! LOL) and laughed.

"I really don't!" I said.

He looked at me. "Then write something."

I laughed him off but he was serious. WTF? How did he think I could write a book? I was a reader. To make a long story short, he dared me. I accepted (jokingly) and started messing around with an idea of a cocky, stubborn, gorgeous man named Cane Alexander.

I picked at this book for months. Weeks would go by and I'd leave it sitting on my computer unopened. Then I would dive in for a few days then exit again. This went on and on until I hit a certain part ... then I was hooked. I couldn't stop writing. I dreamed about Cane and Jada. Every song on the radio was for them. I stayed up all night writing with my best friend Mandi Beck (she was writing Love Hurts at the time). We'd check in every hour via FB Messenger and write, write, write.

I'll be honest—I didn't think I'd publish it. I wasn't writing it to publish it. I was writing it originally as a dare, then as a distraction from four little boys and a messy house and gum on the carpet, and then because I had to. But publish? No. Not me.

How could that be me? Preposterous!

Eventually, I caved to the pressure and figured it would be a good learning experience. But I was not writing a book two. This was an experiment. That's it.

Do you know what that experiment led me to? Well, many things, if I'm being honest. Excitement. Joy. A rush of adrenaline. A feeling of accomplishment. It gave me a little bit of myself that I'd lost over the years. It made me remember who I am.

It was also the scariest thing I'd ever done.

I'm not a big risk-taker. I play things safe. But, for whatever reason, I took the plunge into something that scared the crap out of me and it changed my life.
